The World Health Organization has come up with a new name for monkeypox, as it tries to avoid a term that's led to “racist and stigmatizing language” online and in public.

WHO officials said Monday that they've been working on a new name since August and they've finally settled on one: "mpox."

More people can soon get their monkeypox vaccines as Toronto is expanding its eligibility for who can get a dose.

As of Friday, August 26, Toronto Public Health will start vaccinating more eligible people against monkeypox, in alignment with the Ontario government's newly released guidance for who can get "pre-exposure vaccination."

An outbreak of monkeypox has recently been spreading across the U.S., and, according to the CDC, there are thousands of reported cases out there. The three states reporting the most cases are New York, California and Florida.

Reported numbers vary considerably between the top three states. New York has the most at 2,620; California counts 1,945; and Florida follows with 1,268. This data was last updated on August 16 at 2 p.m.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has issued an update following the WHO's declaration that "the multi-country outbreak of monkeypox constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern."

According to a statement from the government agency on Saturday, July 23, there are currently 681 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Canada across five provinces.
